Balance is a Skill, NOT a Fixed Ability
This week, I want to talk about balance. We sometimes think of balance as something we either have—or don’t. But balance is a skill we can practice and improve throughout our lives.
Balance isn’t just about standing on one foot. It’s about functional balance: the ability to stay steady while doing the everyday things that make up our lives—getting up from a chair, reaching for something on a shelf, stepping over a doorway, turning, walking, or carrying something.
The encouraging news is that practicing balance doesn’t have to mean doing difficult exercises. Small movements matter. The National Institute on Aging recommends balance activities and notes that yoga can combine balance, strength, and flexibility ;)
A little practice, done consistently, can help you feel steadier, stronger, and more stable in your everyday movements. So please keep coming to class. Have patience with yourself. Stay focused, breathe, and remember that progress doesn’t always come in big, obvious changes. Sometimes, it’s found in a small shift, a steadier step, a deeper breath or simply feeling a bit more confident in your movements.
I hope everyone has a great week, I’ll see you on the mat!
